The Gold Star Muslim father who made a name for himself sparring with Donald Trump in 2016 is using his newfound fame to stump for Democrats in 2018, The Hill reports.
Khizr Khan told The Hill he is working with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) on endorsements as well as appearances in an attempt to help Dems take back the majority in the House and Senate.
Khan's motivation: The tragedy at Charlottesville, for one.
"It is from that angle that I support these candidates and I stand with them. I lend them my voice. I go to their fundraisers if it can add to their strength," Khan told The Hill.
Khan's criticism of then-candidate Trump during his speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2016 led to Trump's counteroffensive of Khan and his wife.
Many found it appalling that Trump would lash out at parents of a soldier who died fighting in Iraq in 2004.
"Voters, especially Democratic primary voters, remember his battle with Trump and see him as a symbol of the resistance," Democratic strategist Jesse Ferguson told The Hill. "I think for voters, he is a reminder that we’re better than this, and that is a powerful and compelling message for the midterms."
