Democratic strategists who urged 2020 presidential contenders to avoid a “circular firing” squad and instead focus their attacks on President Trump saw their worst fears confirmed Thursday night, as frontrunner Joe Biden took blow after blow from fellow Democrat Kamala Harris over the issue of race in America.

In the debate's second hour, a dramatic exchange that could alter the dynamics of the race, Harris, a prosecutor and the former Attorney General of California who has earned a reputation as a razor-sharp inquisitor of congressional witnesses, began by interjecting that, as the only person of color on the stage, “I would like to speak on the issue of race.”
