Former President Donald Trump will host a fundraiser for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Washington Examiner reported.
Paxton, a Republican, is in a tough reelection fight with Democrat challenger Rochelle Garza. Paxton led by a slim 34% to 32% in a Dallas Morning News-University of Texas poll released Sunday.
The Examiner learned that Trump will host a Sept. 1 fundraiser for Paxton at the former president’s Bedminster Golf Club in New Jersey. It will include a dinner reception with Trump, an after-party at a private home, and a golf opportunity with Trump for higher-level donors.
Tickets to attend the fundraiser begin at $1,000 and top out at $50,000, which enables a photo with Trump and attendance at a roundtable, the media outlet said.
Garza has received nearly $520,000 in campaign donations in recent months, compared to the $340,000 raised by Paxton, the Examiner reported. Paxton's campaign, though, told the outlet that he has a $3.5 million war chest.
Trump's endorsement helped Paxton in 2018 and so far this year, when the attorney general defeated Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush in the GOP primary.
"I think a lot of Republicans have had enough of it," Paxton said, referring to the Bush family, in a radio interview earlier this year, the Examiner reported. "The Bushes have had their chances. It's time for the dynasty to end. It's time for somebody to get in there and fight and not capitulate to the establishment."
Trump endorsed Paxton for a third term in July 2021.
"Attorney General Ken Paxton has been bravely on the front line in the fight for Texas, and America, against the vicious and very dangerous Radical Left Democrats, and the foolish and unsuspecting RINOs that are destroying our Country," Trump said in a statement, using the acronym for Republicans in name only.
"Ken is strong on Crime, Border Security, the Second Amendment, Election Integrity and, above all, our Constitution. He loves our Military and our Vets. It is going to take a PATRIOT like Ken Paxton to advance America First policies in order to Make America Great Again."
Paxton has sued the Biden administration 31 times over its border policies, the Examiner reported, with Texas winning more than 90% of those cases, according to the attorney general’s office.
Last month, Paxton sued the administration over its claim that federal law preempts state law when it comes to performing life-saving abortions.
In September, Paxton sued the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, alleging that it misstated a law that protects gay and transgender workers.
