Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said Sunday he expects the upcoming Senate impeachment trial against President Donald Trump to be “a grueling” experience.
In an interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Cornyn said he expects lawmakers will be engaged in a tough process, “sitting in our chairs for six hours a day…six days a week.”
“This is going to be a grueling exercise,” he said.
Cornyn was critical of the abuse of power charge they’ll be asked to weigh.
“[It's] certainly not a crime and something that no one had ever dreamed in the past would have risen to the level of impeachment,” he said, adding: “This is the first time a president has been impeached for a non-crime for events that never occurred.”
He also dismissed Democrats’ requests that witnesses be allowed in the Senate trial.
"They're getting cold feet or have a lack of confidence in what they've done so far,” he said. "If the House isn't prepared to go forward with the evidence that they produced in the impeachment inquiry, maybe they ought to withdraw the articles of impeachment and start over again.”
