Despite topping the medal count in total golds and overall, American viewership of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics hit a record low that marketing experts attribute to a "tsunami" of circumstances including a brutal time difference and "woke" athletes’ contempt for the United States.
After the opening ceremony immediately cratered with the worst viewership numbers since 1988, the Games struggled to recover, and numerous nights drew only about half of the number of Americans who tuned in to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, according to numbers from NBC Universal.
