The partial government shutdown is the second longest ever. If it continues through Saturday, it will become the longest and no doubt the most expensive ever, surpassing even the 21-day shutdown of 1995-96.
In some ways, the impact of the shutdown has been obvious: About 800,000 federal employees are missing paychecks, and the delays at TSA checkpoints are getting longer.
