In modern times, the Baltic was becoming known for its beautiful scenery, ports, and cruises. This perception is being rapidly displaced as the Baltic is becoming ground zero of the showdown between the Chinese-led alliance to topple the West.

The Chinese, Russians, and even the Iranians are surging their worldwide "Shadow Fleets" of merchant vessels to get around Western sanctions. The ships carry gas, oil, bulk commodities, and containerized cargo, often using the Polar Route to leverage a shorter path and also stay away from the Straits of Malacca by Singapore, a place where Western aligned navies can easily interdict sanctioned shipments.
