Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana called the Democrats $1.9 trillion spending package a “giveaway bill,” decrying its $112 million “subway to Silicon Valley” but no money for mental health initiatives he noted were being affected by the COVID-19 imposed closure of schools.

“Two Democrats voted no in the House, so there was bipartisan opposition, that giveaway bill,” Scalise said on Newsmax TV’s “Spicer & Co.” “Three hundred fifty billion to bail out failed states. Not a single dime dedicated to safely re-opening schools at a time when you have union bosses sending their kids to private school, but saying ‘Your kid shouldn’t being going to school in person.’”

Scalise, the No. 2 ranking member of the GOP House leadership who was shot during a baseball practice in 2017 by a former volunteer for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign, was referring to the story regarding Berkeley teachers’ union president Matt Meyer. Meyer was seen on video taking his 2-year-old daughter to in-person preschool after openly declaring that Berkeley schools shouldn’t re-open until all teachers there were vaccinated.

“We tried to take the money from (House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi’s $112 million subway to Silicon Valley, take that money and give it to the mental health needs of kids who are being denied the ability to go back to school,” Scalise said. “Not a single Democrat would vote for that amendment to help those kids who are having serious mental health issues.

“Such a misguided bill. Very little to do with COVID. All to do with giving away money to the wild left liberal causes.”
