Lawyer Jordan Sekulow has some advice for his one-time client and former President Donald Trump: Don’t smile like Jenna Ellis for your mugshot.
Sekulow, the executive director of the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) and the son of famed attorney Jay Sekulow, told Newsmax Thursday that for his mugshot Trump probably should not smile like his former attorney, Ellis. But he also should not replicate Rudy Giuliani’s smile.
“I think a balance in between,” Sekulow said on “Wake Up America."
Sekulow said it’s still not a given that Trump will have a mugshot taken when he surrenders at the Fulton County (Georgia) jail Thursday night, given security issues.
But if he does, aim for somewhere between Giuliani’s scowl and Ellis’ pearly whites.
“Maybe not as exuberant as a big smile,” Sekulow said. “But I think somewhere between a smile and a mugshot. Maybe taking it serious; you’re not happy to be there. But you don’t want to be caught off guard.
“But I still think it’s up in the air if we’re actually gonna get this mugshot,” Sekulow added. “There’s still serious debate going on between the Secret Service … if they’re going to allow that to move forward. Certainly, it does sound like if Fulton County, the sheriff, and the DA have their way, we will see a mugshot.”
Sekulow, himself a former Trump attorney, also weighed in on Trump’s decision to replace his lead Georgia attorney, Drew Findling, with Atlanta-based lawyer Steven Sadow on Thursday.
“[Sadow’s] had a very long and distinguished career in criminal law,” Sekulow said on the show, adding that his father and Sadow were in the same law school class at Emory University.
“You get to this point where you try to figure out what are you gonna be hit with indictment-wise, what’s it gonna look like,” Sekulow said about the switch. “This is the point where if you are going to shake up your team, you have to shake it up now because motions have to be filed, real decisions gotta be made.”
Sekulow wrapped up by saying that the case could still be moved to federal court.
“Basically any time the president has a case, it could be moved to federal court,” Sekulow said. “So don't read too much into the fact that Judge [Steve] Jones denied the [Mark] Meadows’ requests. That was to put a stay on turning himself in. That was not on the merits.”
