The Tribune Company will slash 700 jobs from its newspaper unit over the next year, the company's own Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.
The 6 percent staff reduction will largely involve operations personnel rather than reporters and editors, Tribune's chief executive, Peter Liguori, told the LA Times.
The company, which also owns The Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, Hartford Courant, Orlando Sentinel, and South Florida Sun Sentinel, has suffered erosion in newspaper advertising.
"Over time, there will be some small reductions in editorial staff, but the majority of these reductions are going to come from non-reader-facing functions," Liguori said.
The reorganization is "not by any means a Hail Mary pass," he said.
Departments that are now managed by individual newspapers, such as advertising and circulation, will be consolidated into single units across the company.
Tribune reported a nearly $50 million profit in the third quarter, but that came largely from cost-cutting. Since 2010, the company has cut about 2,200 jobs, and currently employs about 11,500 workers.
