The New York Times editor mocked for her reaction to then-President-elect Joe Biden's arrival in the Washington, D.C., area the day before the inauguration no longer works for the newspaper.

Freelance editor Lauren Wolfe said she was fired, according to The Washington Post.

On Sunday, the Times denied there had been a direct connection between Wolfe's pro-Biden tweet and the end of her working relationship with the newspaper.

"There's a lot of inaccurate information circulating on Twitter," Times spokeswoman Danielle Rhoades Ha told the Post. "For privacy reasons we don't get into the details of personnel matters, but we can say that we didn't end someone's employment over a single tweet. Out of respect for the individuals involved, we don't plan to comment further."

The Times added Wolfe worked as an informal freelancer who was not full-time nor had a contract.

Wolfe had been ridiculed on social media Tuesday after tweeting while seeing Biden's plane landing on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews in Prince George's County, Md.

"Biden landing at Joint Base Andrews now," Wolfe wrote, while watching CNN's coverage of Biden's plane landing on the tarmac. "I have chills."

Wolfe's tweet quickly was criticized by some conservatives who said it showed a pro-Biden bias, and mocked by others who compared the editor to MSNBC host Chris Matthews, who said he had a "thrill up the leg" about President Barack Obama.

Wolfe's departure from the Times was first reported by journalist Yashar Ali, who cited two unnamed sources saying the editor "had her contract canceled" by the newspaper.

Several media members, including independent journalist Jeremy Scahill and USA Today’s Kirsten Powers, slammed the Times for severing ties with Wolfe.

The Times workers' union released a statement Sunday saying it had reached out to offer support and representation while it was "investigating the situation," per The Hill.

"The New York Times management decision to terminate the employment of Lauren Wolfe was done outside of the just cause protections of our contract due to her classification as a casual employee," the Times Guild said in its statement.

"We believe all our members deserve due process and just cause protections, the very rights that are fundamental to independent, objective journalism."
