McDonald's said it was the victim of a Twitter hack Thursday after a tweet posted to its account called President Donald Trump "disgusting."
According to a Business Insider reporter, this tweet appeared on the McDonald's timeline Thursday morning before being deleted:
A short time later, McDonald's — which has 151,000 Twitter followers — posted a follow-up tweet explaining what happened:
The bulk of tweets on the McDonald's account are about its products, and many contain images of french fries, burgers, and coffee drinks available at the international chain.
Thursday's rogue tweet was even pinned to the top of the company's Twitter timeline before it was taken down. According to the above screenshot, it was posted at 9:16 a.m. ET.
According to CNBC, hundreds of Twitter accounts belonging to users such as pop singer Justin Bieber and Forbes were hacked Wednesday. It's unclear if the McDonald's situation is related to those cases.
The Hill notes that Trump once appeared in a commercial for McDonald's and has posted images of himself over the years eating the company's food. Robert Gibbs, who served as former President Barack Obama's press secretary from 2009-2011, was hired by McDonald's in 2015 as its chief communications officer.
