Green Party candidate for president Jill Stein was booted off Hofstra University's campus Monday afternoon following an impromptu news conference.

Police said Stein didn't have proper credentials to be on the campus, site of the first presidential debate Monday night between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, the Long Island Press reported.

Stein tweeted out the encounter and escort off campus.

More than 1,000 police officers are providing security in and around Hofstra, and various checkpoints have been set up throughout the campus to prevent anyone without credentials to get access to secure areas, the Press reported.

"We were there under legitimate pretenses," Meleiza Figueroa, Stein's press director, told USA Today.

Stein is now waiting at a location near Hofstra University as "hundreds of supporters" are bused in, she said, adding if Stein is not allowed in "Jill will be holding a people's debate outside the crowd."
