House Republicans Propose $650 Billion for Defense

House Republicans released their proposal for $650 billion in defense spending Tuesday. And there’s at least one issue on which they and President Barack Obama agree, Politico reports. The plan meets all of Obama’s requests to finance the country’s wars.

To be sure, the package also adds conditions for counter-insurgency funding for Pakistan, requiring a more thorough explanation of how that aid is used.

The plan would provide a $17 billion increase in regular defense spending to $530 billion and an estimated $119 billion for our military activity, mostly in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The plan allocates $1.1 billion in counter-insurgency money to Pakistan’s government, but 75 percent of that would be withheld until the Defense and State Departments tell Congress how the money is spent.
