Marching Against Israel Is Dangerously Naïve

The Jew-haters — and there’s no point any longer in softening the epithet — are starting to make me feel cornered. I am Jewish and wear a gold Shield of David around my neck, always.

Shameful, uncontrolled Leftists and Middle Eastern migrants have flooded the streets of many European capitals. Skokie, my hometown, has seen violence.

Hopefully, there will come a time when I can go back to visit my father’s grave. I used to go on frequent roadtrips to NYC, but several campuses exploding with unrest have convinced me to give the city wide berth.

On Sunday, word came out that a Kosher restaurant in Philadelphia was swarmed by the grossest, foulest people shouting threats last heard at Kristallnacht, when German businesses and historic synagogues were destroyed in November, 1938.

My head popped up. I live about 35 miles from the Mason-Dixon line, separating Maryland from Pennsylvania. Philly is our de facto meeting place — I’ve been to so many conventions there over the years. I wondered what the restaurant was.

I found out: Goldie, and the month before, Laser Wolfe (Fiddler on the Roof fans are surely smiling), both under the auspices of American Israeli chef Michael Solomonov. My heart leapt into my throat: I know who he is.

For a few years, the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington has offered webinar cooking classes/demonstrations led by Solomonov. He’s American, but spent lots of time in the restaurant business in Israel. He’s won some of the highest awards. Just as New England or the South have many different cooking styles, so does Israel.

I have taken his classes — sometimes co-hosted with a chef in Israel, sometimes pressing his cute little son into sous-chef duty — cooking for Hanukkah, Rosh Hashana, Fall Flavors, Spring Flavors, Flavors of Israel. The livestreams are in his home kitchen and welcome questions in the live chat.

Solomonov is not shy in talking about the stove he commissioned, kitchen items he would like in a perfect world and whether certain substitutes would work ... or not. Mushrooms instead of meat? Sure. Swapping out olive oil for something else? Absolutely not.

I learned olive oil is part of the taste of Israel. I’ve noted that he likes things on the spicy side. He gives home cooks tips on where to find the more exotic ingredients. Just as baking cookies is a harbinger for some to Christmas, Solomonov’s ideas for the Jewish holidays usher in that feeling of tradition for me.

The ignorant and dystopian Hamas supporters are already causing, albeit shamefully, lots of towns and cities to cancel Hanukkah menorah lighting. The holiday starts the evening of December 7. I never thought I’d see these things happen in the United States. I ask myself, were these hateful agitators raised by zoo animals?

I know my “tribe” and realize that many, if not most, proudly stood as “Progressives.” They’ve opened their hearts to people who would rape and immolate them, if only given the opportunity.

I’ve seen them throwing away thousands of years of moral teachings and traditions: knitting their pink hats, trying to say that cooking an omelette on a gas stove will be responsible for making someone miserable 100 years after we’re dead. Above all, they attribute every ill and disappointment in their life to Donald Trump.

American Jews: You’d better wake up and wake up fast! Marching against Israel is dangerously naïve. Israel is our birthright. Hamas never asked the political beliefs or level of observance of the young women raped and slaughtered on October 7.

Neither did they inquire the background of the babies they beheaded and baked in ovens, proudly emulating Nazi concentration camps. They’ve trapped you in schools and apartments, not impressed that you voted for the out-of-it occupant in the White House.

He’s already pressuring Israel to surrender, because 75% support of Hamas sounds about right to him. Secretary of State Blinken thinks he can make people forget the utter humiliation he took on the chin from the CCP in Alaska by threatening our ally Israel that they “don’t have the credit” to continue to defend themselves. Very mafia-like: “Shame if something would happen to you ...”

If you don’t have the self-respect or courage to go public, know that your vote is secret. Without sharp, fearless Trump back in office, our very essence will be incinerated.

Look around you — the walls are closing in and time is running out. We owe a principled stance for our people to ensure the next 3,000 years to come.
