Billionaire Sheldon Adelson is known for many things — yet not enough for his partnership with women and feminism.
The eighth richest American according to Fortune Magazine is Sheldon Adelson – that title is held jointly with his wife Miriam, who has a larger level of ownership in the title than her husband. As of 2016, their estimated net worth was over $33 billion. They were the largest individual contributors to Trump’s 2016 campaign, donating $25 million. While Newt Gingrich was still in the running for president during the 2012 campaign cycle, the Adelsons contributed two separate $5 million checks to bolster his campaign, one from Sheldon and one from Miriam.
Miriam Adelson may stay more in the background when it comes to their various businesses and charitable work — and she is also a respected medical doctor too. The couple has four children together and have been married since 1991. He hails from Boston, Massachusetts where his father was a taxi driver.
Miri, as she is known to her friends and family, has studied microbiology, genetics, biological research, internal medicine, emergency room work, and chemical dependency and drug addiction (especially HIV among addicts). She still dons a lab coat frequently. In speaking about her husband and marriage, she said, "He is everything to me. He is my best friend, as I know I am to him, and he is a 'mensch.' He claims that I’m an angel and I say he is the 'wind beneath my wings.' In any case, we are on a magnificent flight together."
Some may be surprised that in all their public businesses (held with others), she owns 26.9 percent, while he owns 26.3 percent. But beyond her medical expertise, it was her idea to build the Venetian in Las Vegas, which ultimately shifted much of their wealth into gaming, and began a renovation of the City of Las Vegas, Nevada as well. Together they have funded drug addiction clinics in Las Vegas, Macau, and Singapore, and at every point of their journey, they have worked together as partners — in business and in life.
Notable attention on an issue often overlooked.
