Muriel Bowser, the mayor of Washington, D.C., said that she discussed statehood for the District of Columbia during a meeting with incoming president Donald Trump.
The Washington Post posted video of Bowser making a statement after her meeting with Trump in New York.
She was asked whether they discussed statehood for the District, and she responded, "I'm not going to talk about his feelings or what he shared. We talked about the things that are important to Washingtonians, and certainly, becoming the 51st state is one of them."
"One thing that I know emphatically that he said is that he is a supporter of the District of Columbia, he's familiar with the District of Columbia, and he wants to be supportive," Bowser said.
She said they also discussed Metro, the district's transit system.
D.C.'s voters supported a referendum calling for statehood, with 86 percent in favor.
Politico reported that statehood could possibly require a constitutional amendment.
The move could meet pushback from Republicans, since it might give Democrats more representation in Congress. In the presidential election, D.C. voters supported Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton by 86 points over Trump, according to Politico.
