Most voters doubt President Donald Trump's competence, leadership and dislike his remarks about NFL players, though most disapprove of players kneeling during the national anthem, according to the most recent poll from Quinnipiac University.
When asked about Trump, voters said he:
- Is not honest, 56 percent to 40 percent
- Does not have good leadership skills, 59 percent to 38 percent
- Does not care about average Americans, 54 percent to 44 percent
- Is not level headed, 67 percent to 29 percent
- Is a strong person, 61 percent to 35 percent
- Is intelligent, 56 percent to 40 percent
- Does not share their values, 60 percent to 37 percent
When asked about NFL players kneeling during the national anthem before games to protest law enforcement killing black men:
- Most said Trump's comments on the protests as inappropriate, 58 percent to 34 percent
- Republicans side with Trump, 67 percent to 21 percent
- White voters without higher education are split 46 percent to 45 percent
- Most voters disapprove of players kneeling, 52 percent to 43 percent
- Men are more likely to disapprove, at 57 percent, than women, at 48 percent
- Voters age 18-34 years old approve of kneeling, 60 percent to 27 percent
- Voters over 65 disapprove of kneeling, 62 percent to 34 percent
- Black voters are most likely to approve, at 79 percent, than whites, 37 percent, and Hispanic voters, who are almost evenly split.
Although voters are divided over Trump's response to terrorism, he gets mostly negative ratings on many key issues:
- Foreign policy: 38 percent to 58 percent
- Immigration: 39 percent to 56 percent
- Race relations: 35 percent to 59 percent
- Taxes: 37 percent to 49 percent
Quinnipiac University polled 1,482 registered voters across the country by phone from Oct. 5-10, with a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
