President Donald Trump and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto talked by telephone for an hour Friday, a day after relations between the U.S. and Mexico ruptured over the Trump's plan for a border wall, an administration official said.
Pena Nieto canceled a visit to the White House planned for next week after Trump on Thursday reinforced his demand, via Twitter, that Mexico pay for a barrier along the U.S. southern border to stem illegal immigration. Mexico's government has refused.
The two nations also are embroiled in a dispute over trade. Trump Friday morning tweeted that Mexico “has taken advantage of the U.S. for long enough” by not addressing trade deficits and security along the “very weak border.”
The official confirmed the call on condition of anonymity before an official announcement was released.
Reuters reports that a Mexican government official said Pena Nieto and Trump "also agreed for now to no longer speak publicly about this controversial issue."
