Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting last year with a Russian lawyer who had ties to the Kremlin is "much ado about nothing," his attorney said, Politico has reported.

New York criminal defense attorney Alan Futerfas said Trump Jr. did nothing wrong by meeting with the Russian lawyer.

On Monday, The New York Times reported the president's son was told by email that the meeting to discuss potentially damaging information about Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton was part of Russia's effort to aid his father's campaign for the White House.

Futerfas said in a statement that "Robert Goldstone contacted Don, Jr. in an email and suggested that people had information concerning alleged wrongdoing by Clinton in her dealings with Russia.

"Don Jr.'s takeaway from this communication was that someone had information potentially helpful to the campaign and it was coming from someone he knew. Don Jr. had no knowledge as to what specific information, if any, would be discussed."

The statement also said that his father knew nothing about the meeting, which lasted about 20 to 30 minutes.

Futerfas also said Trump Jr. has not received any requests from any investigative congressional committees, but that he is willing to "work with any committee or office to convey what he knows."

According to the NY Daily News, Futerfas is known for representing mobsters and white collar defendants.

Trump Jr. has appeared to give shifting explanations for the meeting as more details emerge, which has raised suspicion among some critics that he has something to hide.
