Donald Trump Jr. was told before meeting with a Russian lawyer last summer the Russian government was trying to help his father's presidential candidacy, The New York Times reported Monday.

Following up on its report over the weekend that said the meeting between the Russian lawyer, Trump Jr., Paul Manafort, and Jared Kushner took place, the Times claims an email sent to Trump Jr. ahead of the meeting included information indicating the Kremlin was attempting to aid his dad.

Publicist and former British tabloid reporter Rob Goldstone organized the meeting and sent the aforementioned email to Trump Jr. The Times cites three unnamed sources who said the email explained the Russian government had information that could be damaging to Democrat Hillary Clinton's campaign.

It was earlier reported Trump Jr. was promised that information during the meeting with the woman, who has been identified as Natalia Veselnitskaya. Monday's report suggests he knew ahead of time the Russian government was the source of it.

Trump Jr. acknowledged Sunday he met with Veselnitskaya last June, but he did not say anything about the Russian government passing along Clinton dirt. He said the meeting ended up being about Russian adoptions.

There are several ongoing investigations looking at whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians, including a Department of Justice probe headed by former FBI Director Robert Mueller.
