Sen. Tina Smith, D-Minn., said the major issue facing Minnesota voters is President Donald Trump’s trade policy.
“Trade is top of mind and these tariffs and impact of tariffs on Minnesota farm country is what everybody is talking about.,” she said during a Friday interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
Smith was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Sen. Al Franken.
“I was talking with a farmer in the south-central part of the state and he said: ‘Look around, you can see a mile in every direction we just lost over $100,000 just in the last month by the fall in prices.’
“People say I really think that we need to stand tough on trade, we need to have good tough trading negotiations especially with China, but they also say you can't really start a multiple front war on trade and expect to win and that's kind of the situation we're in.”
An NBC/Marist poll found Smith leads GOP challenger Karin Housley 49 percent to 35 percent in a general election matchup.
