The Texas governor's face heated up over the weekend as Democratic gubernatorial nominee Lupe Valdez charged that Gov. Greg Abbott, who is seeking a second term this November, is controlled by President Donald Trump.
"He's basically a puppet for the president," Valdez, the former Dallas County sheriff, said in an interview Sunday with The Texas Tribune. "He's just following in Trump's footsteps, and we're strongly gonna go against that."
Valdez, the former sheriff of Dallas County, said Abbott is "trying to find favor" with Trump, especially on policy concerning the U.S.-Mexico border, which included the governor approving the president's call for hundreds of new National Guard troops to be dispatched to the area.
She also said she is ready to debate Abbott.
"I don't have any problem with debates. I've said from the very beginning, I don’t have any problem with that. I'll debate him anytime," Valdez told the Tribune.
