Sen. Ted Cruz has fallen behind his Democratic challenger in fundraising, the Houston Chronicle reports.

"My opponent is raising a ton of money," Cruz said prior to giving a speech to the Republican Party of El Paso County. "It doesn't hurt that [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer came down to Texas and brought his liberal buddies with him."

Schumer, D-NY, made an appearance with Texas Democrat Rep. Beto O’Rourke, along with other Democratic candidates, in late June. So far this year, O’Rourke has outraised Cruz with roughly $2.3 million compared to Cruz's $803,000, according to the Federal Election Commission.

"Chuck Schumer did a great job — he came to Texas early in the year and got national liberals really excited about the chance to elect a pro-amnesty, anti-gun, pro-big government liberal to represent Texas," Cruz spokeswoman Catherine Frazier told the Texas Tribune in a statement.

"We don’t believe that's the direction Texans want and are confident this will energize them to ensure they turn out to vote for someone who wants to keep taxes low, keep repealing regulations including Obamacare, and uphold the Texas values that have made and kept our state strong,” she added.
