Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, bashed efforts to trample on Americans' Second Amendment rights Thursday and took a shot at a CNN town hall that focused on gun control in the wake of a school shooting massacre.

Cruz addressed the audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) and said Democrats are trying to take guns away from law-abiding citizens.

"Every time you see a horrific crime, people in the media and Democratic politicians immediately try to leap on it to advance their agenda," Cruz said. "Their agenda is stripping the Second Amendment rights away from law-abiding citizens. [Sen.] Dianne Feinstein was very open and candid when she said, 'If I can say, Mr. America, Mrs. America, give me your guns, I will.' That is where they want to end up."

Cruz then referenced a CNN town hall that aired Wednesday night. The program featured, among others, survivors of last week's school shooting in Florida that left 14 children and three staff members dead. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and other lawmakers faced questions from students about how they plan to prevent shootings from happening in the future.

"You look at one of the biggest cheer lines [on the CNN town hall] last night, it was when talking about confiscating guns," Cruz said. "It is profoundly unconstitutional, but it also doesn't work."

Earlier in his speech, Cruz referred to the aforementioned town hall as "last night's CNN infomercial."

"If you look at the jurisdictions with the toughest gun-control laws, cities like Chicago, cities like Washington, D.C., they often have the highest murder rates and crime rates," Cruz said. "You want to see crime take off? Disarm the law-abiding citizens."

He went on to say he supports prosecuting convicted felons who lie on background check forms in an effort to illegally buy guns. Cruz and Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, introduced a bill after the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting that would have taken steps to do just that. Democrats, Cruz said, blocked the measure.

"We can stop these [shootings] by going after criminals," he said Thursday.
