Jobs in Texas could be at risk due over President Donald Trump’s plans for tariffs and other trade actions, Dallas News reported.
Tariffs on China could put more than 156,000 jobs in Texas at risk, second only to California, with two Texas counties, Tarrant and Harris, having the greatest exposure to risk, a Brookings Institution report said.
That report said that Trump’s actions on trade “could soon have real implications for real jobs in real local economies.”
The Dallas News also noted a report in The Beige Book, prepared by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. “Outlooks, while still optimistic, have become more uncertain due to new tariffs and trade concerns,” the Beige Book report said.
Staffing companies are seeing high demand but “uncertainty” surrounding trade policies and new tariffs, while retailers are also facing uncertainty over the possible negative effects of the policies, the Beige Book said.
Trump’s delaying of decisions on tariff exemptions adds to the uncertainty, The Dallas News report said.
"This has thrown everybody into a tizzy — as it should," said Harvey Rosenblum, a former Dallas Federal Reserve researcher, The Dallas News reported.
However, Brookings expert Geoffrey Gertz urged a more cautious approach to the concerns. "There is one fundamental rule for making sense of trade policy over Trump’s first 16 months in office: Do not overreact to new announcements," Gertz wrote.
