Sununu: '19 or 20' Potential VP Choices

Monday, 30 April 2012 05:18 PM EDT

The list of possible running mates for presumptive GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is about 20 names long according to top adviser John Sununu. The former New Hampshire governor made the remark as Romney campaigned with Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., CNN reported.

"I know that the bowl has about 19 or 20 little folded pieces of paper in it, and they keep shaking the bowl," Sununu said while noting that Ayotte is a "strong candidate" for the post. Sununu said the vice presidential search is still in the early stages despite Romney’s recent appearances with a series of potential running mates.

"He's in a battleground state with a very important elected senator from a battleground state," Sununu said according to CNN. "When he goes to Ohio he's got [Sen. Rob] Portman on the stage and [Gov. John] Kasich on the stage. When he goes to Virginia it's [Gov. Bob] McDonnell. When you go to the battleground states you get as much of the powerhouses as you can on the stage."
