White House senior adviser Stephen Miller on Sunday lashed out at “left-wing rulings” on immigration — and insisted Americans want a border wall even if President Donald Trump’s demand for $5 billion in funding forces a government shutdown.
In remarks on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Miller decried the ruling of "left-wing activist" District Court Judge Jon Tigar, who blocked a Trump policy denying illegal immigrants asylum unless they legally enter through a port of entry.
“One of the great tragedies is the loopholes in our immigration laws and deficiencies in immigration laws and left wing rulings that incentivize the most vulnerable populations to come to our country,” Miller declared. “Last year 100,000 unaccompanied children or children traveling with adults showed up at our southern border.
“President Trump took … dramatic action, issued an executive order directing illegal traffic to the ports of entry. But a left-wing activist judge issued a reckless, nationwide injunction… putting thousands of lives at risk.”
His remarks followed the death of a 7-year-old girl from Guatemala after being taken into custody of the Border Patrol.
“The loss of that precious life is horrifying,” he said. “It is a painful reminder of the ongoing humanitarian tragedy that is illegal immigration, the misery that it spreads.”
But Miller insisted the $5 billion funding of a border wall being demanded by Trump is necessary — and what voters want.
“This is what the American people want,” he said. “Both parties to come together for the sake of American children, for the sake of children all across this hemisphere to create a lawful system of immigration, not the lawless chaos that is perpetuated.”
Miller also predicted Obamacare — which was invalidated by a federal judge in Texas last week — will ultimately be struck down by the Supreme Court of the United States.
“A flawed law would be off the books,” he said. “This president, working with members of both parties, will be able to replace it with something that not only expands choice, expands competition, enshrines state lines, but protects preexisting conditions in a much better way than the current law does.”
Pressed on whether he thinks the Affordable Care Act will be struck down by the nation’s high court, he responded: “I believe that's it. Because it's always been unconstitutional.”
