Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., on Sunday said President Donald Trump was only being “political” when he asked for Ukraine and China to investigate his political rival, Joe Biden.
In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Alabama’s senior senator dismissed the requests were out of the ordinary.
“Those are just statements — political,” he asserted. “They make them all the time. I didn’t say it was okay. People do things, things happen. [Trump is] the President of the United States but he’s still human.”
“I don’t believe … that it rises to the standard of an impeachable offense, but I still think we should wait to see what comes out at trial,” he added.
He also said he hasn’t prejudged the case — though he admitted “I have my own thoughts about certain things.”
“We were sworn the other day to follow the facts and render a decision accordingly,” he said. “So that’s what I intend to do. I have not prejudged anything.”
But he conceded, “It looks like the … House has a weak hand.”
