Sen. Rand Paul blasted the spending bill that lawmakers in Congress passed and President Donald Trump signed into law on Friday, musing that for Republicans, maybe "holding hands with Democrats isn't such a great idea," The Hill reported.
"The debt is up over a trillion the Dow is down...Maybe the GOP holding hands with Democrats isn't such a great idea," Paul tweeted Saturday.
The $1.3 trillion spending package Congress passed includes millions of dollars of new domestic spending, which appealed to Democrats, but also contained increases for the military, which Trump has said was a priority.
On Friday, Paul tried to live tweet his attempt to read the 2,232-page document. Lawmakers were trying to pass legislation for Trump to sign to avert a Friday night deadline that would have shut down the government if an agreement had not been made.
Paul called the bill "terrible, no good, rotten deficit spending bill." He maintained the bill was so large, lawmakers could not have had the time to understand all of its provisions. Paul did briefly shut down the federal government in February on another spending bill over what he said were wasteful government expenditures.
Trump reluctantly signed the bill into law, but warned lawmakers he would "never sign another bill like this again."
