The GOP did not compare Donald Trump to Jesus Christ in a Christmas message it sent out early Sunday, a claim Republican National Committee spokesman Sean Spicer told one reporter was “sad.”

The RNC’s Christmas message read, in part, “Over two millennia ago, a new hope was born into the world, a Savior who would offer the promise of salvation to all mankind. Just as the three wise men did on that night, this Christmas heralds a time to celebrate the good news of a new King.”

The note was interpreted by some as comparing Christ to Trump.

But Spicer said that wasn’t the case.

"Christ is the King in the Christian faith," he told CNN.
