President Donald Trump's impeachment will be a "stain" on the Democratic Party and on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's legacy, Rep. Steve Scalise said Wednesday.
"They set out from day one to impeach this president," the Louisiana Republican said on Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "It has nothing to do with crimes. Over 50 Democrats voted to impeach Donald Trump because he criticized NFL players who kneeled during the Pledge of Allegiance. They put this country through this and wasted a year of their majority not fighting for men and women of this country."
Scalise also commented on House Democrats' vow to continue investigating Trump, including comments House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler made to reporters that his committee will subpoena former national security adviser John Bolton to testify.
"They've tipped their hat a long time ago they're the party of impeachment," said Scalise. "It's all they have. They have no agenda."
However, when Pelosi ripped up Trump's State of the Union speech containing the names of soldiers and others who gave up their lives for the United States, it showed that Democrats don't "celebrate the success of America like President Trump does," said Scalise. "Trump has such a great case to make going into the election. They're the party of impeachment. It's all they've got.
Scalise said it was also "disgraceful" that Pelosi wouldn't stand when talk radio star Rush Limbaugh was honored with the Medal of Freedom.
"He speaks truth to power on both sides, by the way," said Scalise. "President Trump celebrated him not just for what he has done on radio but in his battle against cancer. Rush is a tough guy. I hope he beats cancer. Everybody should have stood for that. It makes them look little as a party when they don't do that."
