House Speaker Paul Ryan easily won re-election Tuesday, beating his Democratic challenger by as many as 50 points on a night where Republicans were expected to retain control of the lower chamber.
Here are the results, according to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
- Ryan: 67 percent.
- Democrat Ryan Solen: 27 percent.
- Independent Spencer Zimmerman: 3 percent.
- Libertarian Jason Lebeck: 2 percent.
Ryan, who was first elected to Congress in 1998, was Mitt Romney's running mate in 2012.
Solen, digital forensic specialist, is a first-time challenger and an Iraqi war veteran.
Ryan is the former chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee before being elected speaker in last October. He also was chairman of the House Budget Committee.
He clashed with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump during the campaign — though he voted for him last week and said that he would focus on getting down-ballot Republicans elected in both the House and Senate.
