Despite President Donald Trump's tweeted warning of a government shutdown in lieu of border security funding, Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., is hoping to avoid "playing shutdown politics."
"Let's hope not," Johnson, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, told CBS host Margaret Brennan when asked about a shutdown on Sunday's "Face the Nation." "I think, hopefully, most of the appropriation bills will actually be passed a little more — a little better prioritization of spending.
"So, I certainly don't like playing shut down politics."
President Trump's tweets pressed Democrats to get on board with voting for funding the U.S-Mexico border wall, getting rid of the visa lottery and catch and release, while moving toward merit-based immigration.
The prospect of President Trump's preemptive shutdown might prove damaging for Republicans in the midterm elections.
"I don't think it'd be helpful, so let's try and avoid it," Johnson told Brennan.
