Romney Adviser: We Won’t Put Great Energy into Pennsylvania, Michigan

By    |   Tuesday, 16 October 2012 11:48 AM EDT

Despite polls showing the President Barack Obama’s lead is dwindling in Pennsylvania and Michigan, the Romney campaign doesn’t plan on devoting a large amount of resources there, says a senior adviser to the candidate.

The adviser spoke to Politico anonymously.

In Pennsylvania, a Quinnipiac poll taken Oct. 12-14 shows Obama with a 4 percentage point lead, down from 12 points Sept. 18-24.

In Michigan, the last five polls tallied by Real Clear Politics, taken Oct. 4-11, give Obama an average lead of 4.4 percentage points, compared to 10 points in the prior five polls, taken Sept. 14-27. Romney’s blowout debate win took place Oct. 3.

“I won't blow smoke at you with Pennsylvania and Michigan, even though there are polls showing that they’re in sight,” the adviser said. “I absolutely believe they’re close. It’s just, to go in, to move 3 points in Pennsylvania is different than moving 3 points in New Hampshire.”

To be sure, it’s not as if the Republican side is doing nothing in the two states. Vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney’s wife Ann have campaigned there, and the pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future is airing TV ads in Michigan.
