Businessman Ken Block Enters Rhode Island Governor's Race as Republican

By    |   Monday, 28 October 2013 02:46 PM EDT

Multimillionaire businessman Ken Block, the Moderate Party’s unsuccessful 2010 candidate for governor of Rhode Island, is becoming a Republican to run again in 2014, the Providence Journal reports.

In a letter sent to GOP voters, Block, a businessman, says he has a plan "to save Rhode Island $1 billion in wasteful spending."

"The Rhode Island Democratic Party, through its control of the General Assembly, has proven itself completely incapable of governing the state."

Block is president of Simpatico Software Systems, a software company, and Cross Alert Systems, which manufactures specialized traffic signals.

He likely will face Cranston Mayor Allan Fung, who is expected next month to announce his own GOP bid for governor.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee, a Democrat, announced that he would not seek re-election.

Chafee ran as an independent in a four-way race in 2010, wining the job once held by his father.
