Democrats are more favorable toward socialism than Republicans, but that doesn't mean they want to become a socialist party, according to a new poll from Rasmussen Reports.
Rasmussen asked U.S. voters about their knowledge of and opinion on socialism, and found that although Democrats are more likely to have a favorable view of socialism, though they are also more likely to misunderstand it.
- 51 percent of Democrats view socialism favorably.
- 21 percent of Republicans said the same.
- 26 percent of Independents said the same.
- 19 percent of Democrats think the party should become officially socialist.
- 41 percent of Republicans said the same.
- 25 percent of Independents said the same.
The poll also asked respondents if an individual, in a socialist system, has more power than the government.
According to Merriam-Webster, socialism is "any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods."
- 29 percent of Democrats believe an individual holds more power.
- 12 percent of Republicans said the same.
- 17 percent of independents said the same.
Rasmussen surveyed 1,000 likely voters from July 23-24 with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
