While Americans are increasingly supportive of abortion being legal in all cases, there is some hardening of the partisan divide on the issue, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
Americans who believe abortion should be legal most of the time is up to a record-high 56%, which is 7 percentage points greater than 2008, and those numbers reflect increases across a number of demographics, including Republicans, according to NBC News.
Among the increases since '08:
- Men 2 points.
- Women 11 points.
- Democrats 13 points.
- Republicans 4 points.
The hardening of views, amid recent red states strengthening their laws against abortions, is shown through the percentage of those who say abortion should be illegal without exceptions: 12%. That is 5 percentage points higher than in '08, according to the report.
Among the results in the poll:
- 58% of "core Democrats" want abortion to always be legal – up 8 percentage points since March 2018.
- 27% of "core Republicans" want abortion to be illegal without exception – up 9 percentage points since March '18.
The poll was conducted among 1,000 adults and 825 registered voters between June 8-11. The margin of error among adults was plus or minus 3.1 percentage points and plus or minus 3.4 percentage points among registered voters.
