Portman Wins in Ohio Over Fisher

Tuesday, 02 November 2010 07:33 PM EDT

Ohio Republican Rob Portman, a veteran of President George W. Bush's White House, has defeated Democratic Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher for the U.S. Senate.

Fisher has faced criticism about how the state lost 400,000 jobs since 2006 while he was the state's economic development director.

Democrats had tried to link Portman's positions as Bush's budget director and trade ambassador to the Great Recession.

The had hoped that two-term Republican Sen. George Voinovich's retirement would allow them to grab the seat, but Fisher's campaign faltered.
