Vice President Kamala Harris, riding a wave of momentum after becoming the Democrat presidential nominee, has opened a lead of 13 percentage points among women over Donald Trump, her Republican rival, a poll released Wednesday showed.
The Economist/YouGov poll of 1,368 registered voters taken Aug. 17-20 showed 51% of women favoring Harris and 38% favoring Trump. The former president has a 49%-42% advantage with men, and overall, Harris has a 46%-43% edge over Trump. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points.
Trump gained a larger share of women's votes in 2020 than he did when he defeated Hillary Clinton in 2016, according to the Pew Research Center. Trump got 44% of the women's vote in 2020 vs. 39% in 2016. Clinton got 54% in 2016, and Joe Biden got 55% in 2020.
The poll found the number of Democrats who said they are extremely or very enthusiastic about voting for president this year has continued to climb since Biden decided last month not to seek reelection and ceded the top spot on the ticket to Harris. The poll showed 71% of Democrats said they are extremely or very enthusiastic about voting for president, 17 percentage points higher than on July 20, the day before Biden withdrew from the race.
Among Republicans, 61% said they are extremely or very enthusiastic about voting for president, down 1 percentage point since July 20 and 6 since July 27.
