President Donald Trump will roll out an executive order that not only sets new standards and resources on the use of force but also will assure Americans that "we're supporting law enforcement," Vice President Mike Pence said Tuesday.
"We're not going to defund the police, quite the contrary," Pence said on Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "We're going to fund new resources to help departments obtain certifications that improve standards for the use of force, improve training on de-escalation, and that's exactly what the American people want us to do."
Pence said he and Trump have, over the two weeks after protests arose nationwide over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, sat with law enforcement and leaders in the African-American community in Washington and around the country, resulting in the executive order to be signed in the White House's Rose Garden Tuesday.
In addition to setting new resources and standards on the use of force, the order will provide "a way to be able to track when we see the inappropriate use of force and also resources to encourage using other public officials like social workers and interaction with the public," said Pence. "Our great friend Sen. Tim Scott is working on a bill in the Senate. The president is going to take this action to assure the American people that we're listening."
Pence also on Tuesday spoke out against the violence that has occurred during some of the protests nationwide.
"What happened to George Floyd in Minneapolis was a national tragedy and a disgrace, but the violent protesting and looting that ensued what we saw in Portland, Oregon last night is also a disgrace and totally unacceptable with the American people," said Pence.
Pence also took issue with a tweet from presumptive Democrat nominee Joe Biden, in which he'sd said that "everybody ought to have a fair shot at the American dream."
"We would say, well why don't you support allowing African American families where these kids go to school?" said Pence. "This president actually stood strong for school choice and we doubled the educational choice program in our nation's capital and we really do believe that you shouldn't be denied the ability to choose where your kids go to school just because of your zip code or because of your income."
In addition, under Trump, "we had the lowest unemployment level ever-recorded for African Americans," said Pence. "We worked with Sen. Tim Scott to enact Opportunity Zones... I think millions of African Americans saw the progress that we were making over the last three years and they know as we bring this economy back in the make of not just these tragic events and the violence that ensued."
Under Trump, he added, the African American community has "more access to the American dream than 50 years of Democrat leadership under the likes of Joe Biden has ever given them."
