Obama to Meet with U.S. Senators on Deficit

Monday, 09 May 2011 02:23 PM EDT

WASHINGTON—U.S. President Barack Obama will meet with Senate Democrats Wednesday and Senate Republicans Thursday on issues including the deficit, White House spokesman Jay Carney said Monday.

Obama will meet with the Senate Democratic and Republican caucuses at the White House "to talk about the range of important issues on the legislative agenda, including the need to adopt a balanced approach in confronting the nation's long-term deficit challenges," Carney said at a White House news briefing.

He said Obama plans to meet with the House of Representatives' Democratic and Republican caucuses at the White House for similar discussions within the next few weeks, he said.

Obama and congressional leaders are wranging over spending for the next fiscal year, cutting the $1.4 trillion U.S. deficit and raising the U.S. debt limit.
