Rep. John Faso, R-N.Y., has fallen behind Democratic challenger Antonio Delgado in the race for New York’s 19th Congressional District, according to the Monmouth University Poll.

Delgado holds a 5-point advantage over Faso, polling at 49 percent compared to the congressman’s 44 percent, with 3 percent supporting a different candidate and 4 percent undecided. Women back Delgado 54 percent to 38 percent for Faso, while men support Faso 51 percent to 44 percent.

“The Democrat has strengthened his standing in this race even though Republican interest has picked up over the past month. GOP ads have focused on Delgado’s past as a hip hop artist in an effort to paint him as out of step with the district, but these attacks haven’t changed the overall trajectory of this race,” said Monmouth University Polling Institute director Patrick Murray.

“Voters who name health care as their top concern overwhelmingly back the Democrat,” Murray added. “Immigration and taxes are key issues for Faso supporters, but concerns about these policies are just not as widespread in the district.”

Monmouth surveyed 372 likely voters in the district from Oct. 24 to 28, with a margin of error of +/- 5 percentage points.
