Supreme Court Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch, the newest member of the nation's highest court, dined with Republican senators and a member of the cabinet Monday night.
Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., tweeted about the dinner, saying Gorsuch, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, and other senators were at the home of Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn and his wife Sandy "to talk about important issues facing our country."
Supreme Court justices do not generally fraternize with lawmakers and members of the executive branch because doing so could be construed as a conflict of interest and an attempt to sway their opinion on cases the court takes up.
According to the Code of Conduct for judges in the United States, judges are not allowed to participate in political activity, which includes attending or purchasing a ticket to a political fundraiser.
Based on Alexander's tweet, it does not appear Gorsuch — who was sworn in last April — violated any rules.
