Pelosi: Keep Borders Secure by 'Mowing the Grass'

In lieu of a lengthy border wall between the United States and Mexico, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said mowing the grass could be an effective border security solution.

"I'm not the wall's biggest advocate in Congress, but I do know that representatives in the House and Senators in that body from the border areas have some serious objections to a wall because they know how detrimental it can be to the community trade, to all the other aspects of a border," Pelosi told The Arizona Republic this week.

"But, again, let's sit down and talk this through and see what makes sense, not some commitment to a promise that we're going to build a wall and Mexico's gonna pay for it. That's never going to happen."

Pelosi then rattled off some ideas on border security, which included the use of a lawnmower.

"Let's talk about where a more serious structure might be necessary, where fencing will do or mowing the grass so that people can't be smuggled through the grass," she said. "That's something — levies, technology, personnel."

Lawmakers are trying to piece together immigration legislation before a March 5 deadline, after which people who have benefited from the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program would be subject to deportation. President Donald Trump wants a border wall constructed between the U.S. and Mexico as part of the package.
