In an interview from the nation's border with Mexico airing Monday, Vice President Mike Pence called for Congress to act on immigration reform and building a border wall.

"President Donald Trump has made a priority of border security," Pence told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" co-host Ainsley Earhardt, who interviewed Pence on the Mexico side of the existing border wall, while the vice president was visiting the Dallas area late last week.

"Being here on the border, seeing the work that our border patrol does every day, it just underscores the need for Congress to come together and provide the funding for a border wall system that will enhance the security of our country."

The wall will prevent the flow of illegal immigrants, as well as individuals who represent a danger to the United States' communities and will help stem the flow of illicit drugs, said Pence.

Last week, before Pence traveled to Dallas, the Senate blocked a bipartisan proposal that would have allowed 1.8 million people protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program an opportunity for citizenship, while allowing $25 billion toward a border wall.

The bill, however, had come under fire from the White House and the Department of Homeland Security, as it did not include action on the Visa lottery system or chain migration, two of the pillars of Trump's call for immigration reform.

"I think it was a great disappointment to millions of Americans who [want to] see the four pillars of President Trump's proposal, but, also, it's a deal that permanently solves the issue of DACA," Pence said of the president's plan.

"You have 1.8 million people that were brought into this country as minors, are here through no fault of their own. President Trump, with the compassion of the American people, said we are willing that we should solve that."

Congress has a deadline of March 5 to come up with a plan to "come together and work in a way to not only solve the DACA problem but also to keep the promises that he made to the American people," said Pence.

Already, illegal crossings are down near 50 percent, but still, an average of 1,100 people are caught trying to come into the United States daily, said Pence.

Trump will make the final decision about the wall's structure, said Pence, but the first step is that Congress has to fund it.

"We were disappointed this week, but look, we're going to stay on it," said Pence, calling it "absolutely imperative" that a solution is reached.

"Once that funding is provided, we'll make the decisions and I guarantee you, this builder turned president will get that wall built faster than you could possibly imagine," he promised.
