The White House has "no tolerance" for domestic abuse but could have done a better job dealing with the scandal swirling around former top Donald Trump aide Rob Porter, who resigned after accusations of abuse by two of his ex-wives became public, the Washington Examiner reports.
"This administration has no tolerance for domestic violence. The White House could've handled this better, and I still feel that way," Pence said Wednesday at an event in downtown Washington.
Porter stepped down last week after accusations surfaced that he verbally and physically abused the women. A photo showing one of the women with a black eye was published last week in The Daily Mail.
Porter has denied the allegations.
The scandal widened when it was revealed that several top White House aides, including Chief of Staff John Kelley, knew of the allegations but allowed Porter to continue working.
Pence called Kelly a "good man" who has done "a remarkable job… I look forward to working with him for many months to come."
In an interview with NBC News' Lester Holt at the Olympics in South Korea last week, Pence said he was "appalled" at the allegations. "The time that he resigned was when I first became aware of the allegations of domestic abuse," Pence told NBC.
