White House counsel Don McGahn knew about the abuse allegations against Rob Porter a year ago, but did not investigate them and allowed the ex-staff secretary to serve President Donald Trump, The Washington Post reported.

The Post report comes in the wake of the news that chief of staff John Kelly knew about Porter's alleged spousal abuse of his two ex-wives for months but continued to elevate his profile in the White House anyway.

The Post reports that McGahn was confronted with allegations against Porter several times the past year, starting in January of 2017:

  • June 2017: FBI flagged its findings of Porter to the White House.
  • September 2017: McGahn learned that the abuse allegations were holding up Porter's security clearance.
  • November 2017: A former girlfriend of Porter's, who works in the Trump administration, contacted McGahn about the allegations made by Porter's ex-wives, urging him to investigate.

Porter is currently in a romantic relationship with White House communications director Hope Hicks, who helped draft responses to the allegations against Porter, the Post reported.

The White House told the Post that though McGahn was aware that Porter's ex-wives planned to go public with allegations, McGahn never asked what the allegations were because Porter said they weren't true, the Post reported.

Further, the White House told the Post that the FBI's findings never reached McGahn.

Trump was not told of the allegations against Porter until this week when they showed up in an interview the ex-wives gave to a British newspaper, the Post reported.

Porter resigned Wednesday despite denying the "vile" and "outrageous" allegations against him.
