President Donald Trump should not attempt to provide a presidential pardon for himself, said Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah.
"There’s nothing in the Constitution that prohibits it, but it would be a disaster for them politically, and I don’t recommend it," Lee said Tuesday on Fox News’ "America’s Newsroom."
"I’m not aware of anything in the text of the Constitution or the original understanding of the Constitution that would preclude the president from using this power… I don’t recommend that this president or any subsequent president avail him or herself of this power. It’s not a good idea politically," Lee said in the interview.
Trump tweeted on Monday that he had the "absolute right" to pardon himself. "Why would I do that when I have done nothing wrong?’ he said in a tweet.
Lee also discussed the special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. “Sometimes investigations do take time. I think and I hope that this investigation is probably drawing to a close in the next couple of months. I look forward to seeing whatever final work product Mr. Mueller puts out, and for the American people to be able to review it,” Lee said.
The senator has defended the president’s ability to use his presidential powers before. On May 31, he said that Trump had “adequate authority” to fire James Comey from the FBI.
