Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, defended President Donald Trump's statement Thursday that he did not fire now-former FBI Director James Comey over the Russia investigation.

"It was also about the Hillary investigation," Lee said on CNN's "New Day."

"That was a recommendation that was made to him, that it was based on the Hillary investigation that he be fired," Lee said. "The fact that he might have had a lot of things on his mind, including the fact that he believed that the Russia thing was made up, still doesn't negate the fact that he had adequate reason to fire him, and he had adequate authority to fire him."

Trump tweeted Thursday he "never fired James Comey because of Russia!"

However, the president said in May 2017 that "this Russia thing" was part of his decision to dismiss Comey.

"In fact, when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said, 'You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story,'" Trump said to NBC's Lester Holt on May 11, 2017.

Anchor John Berman asked Lee if there was a pattern of evidence the Russia probe contributed to the firing of Comey because "the president told us so."

"I don't know what he had in mind when he said it," Lee said, noting he had seen no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
